Description
St. Mary's Lighthouse on St. Mary's Island near Whitley Bay at low tide.
The island is connected to the coast at low tide. I've walked over there to visit the little shop they have there. Luckily, I got back before high tide, or I'd have to swim over.
The lighthouse was built in 1898 and continued to function until 1984, when it was taken out of service. The lighthouse is now open to visitors. Unfortunately, when I was there the lantern room was closed due to maintenance work, so I couldn't climb the 137 steps to enjoy the view. It was still nice to visit.
